If you or a family member are struggling with weight challenges, you might feel alone or powerless to make a change. However, you are neither. Weight wellness starts with acknowledging the circumstances as early on as possible so that you can reduce the risk of developing more serious medical conditions later in life. While it's true that a person's genes do influence weight, they are only one small part of the equation. Many other factors come into play. Especially when it comes to children, it's essential to realize that the goal is to grow into one's own ideal weight and not what you see others doing. The next step is to acknowledge that change occurs by establishing a love-filled plan of action to be healthy and happy.

Healthy habits start at home by making better food choices and becoming more active. Make an emotional checklist of what matters most to you for supporting not just the physical steps of weight loss but also the emotional aspects. Schedule regular meal times trusting that this gives you security to eat well instead of grabbing what is readily available. Be smart about snacks and sweets so that you feel the difference between satisfying a craving vs. satisfying the need to refuel your body. Manage screen time so that your mind has time to wind down and don't overlook creating a soothing bedroom environment so that you have a healthy sleep routine and release all tension from your body.

Interestingly enough, conversation is also a key strategy. When you consciously elect to focus on chatting with loved ones about other positive aspects of the day - accomplishments in your daily routine, socializing, playtime, reading, cooking - this can be exactly the self-esteem booster that many need to maintain a healthy mindset and feel encouraged with further positive changes. Motivating yourself to cook at home is another factor because it shape's an understanding for why certain food choices are better than others and ways to creatively innovate bringing out the best flavor and presentation of your meals. Exercise in some way every day is essential for releasing stress and stretching yourself to new levels of endurance. Even taking a 15 minutes walk after dinner rather than plugging into the TV right away can be so powerful. The key is to do things you enjoy and don't get stagnant with the same daily routine.

What's important to realize about strategies for real life is that you have more control than you might think. Focus on the good things that can happen right now based on the choices that you make every day.
